Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?

Well, hopefully you’re not, what perhaps we should be scared of is the digital disruption heading our way.

It’s not a bad thing, it is actually something incredibly exciting, it’s just that we are a little unprepared for it. Let’s just say we have an adventure holiday coming up soon, it’s going to bring a whole load of exciting new experiences, its just that we haven’t even started to think about packing, food or where we will sleep!

If you ask the CEO of a leading bank who he is scared of, it isn’t the other banks. He is scared of Samsung, Facebook and other organisations that form stickier connections with their customers.

Cutting costs via the internet banking revolution seemed like a good idea at the time but the personal relationship that used to exist is gone. People can easily switch between banks, the loyalty has gone and the big 4 banks in Australia may become the new Kodak or Borders Books.

The tagline of the conference where these topics were under discussion was ‘Be bold’ (IBM BusinessSolutions/IBM BusinessConnect May 2014).

Being bold takes us into uncharted territory, where we need to be creative, innovative, inventive.

James O’Loghlin from ABC New Inventors offered up some top tips that you can use in your organization to prepare for the future;

·      Make time to think

·      Make it clear that having ideas is part of everyones role

·      Have a time where people can come and pitch new ideas

·      Thank people for a bad idea (otherwise they might not come to you with a great one!)

If you are unsure where to start, have a think about your business think of a product, a process, a system. Is it perfect? If not there is room for improvement, innovation and invention.

Don’t forget, today’s best practice is tomorrow’s fax machine!
