The question that is often asked is what would you do, if you knew that you wouldn’t fail? That is, if success was guaranteed. What would make you brave?nBrene Brown asks a different question – what’s worth doing even if you fail? What’s worth doing for the learning, for the journey, for the lessons learnt?
We know that contagion of emotions is real. So if you’re coming into work and trying to lead your team whilst your life is falling down around you, it’s very likely that sense of panic and disarray will transfer to your team too. So, this stuff matters – both for you and for the impact it has on those around you.
A “growth mindset,” on the other hand, thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence but as a heartening springboard for growth and for stretching our existing abilities.
In part, the practice of stopping creates a circuit breaker in an otherwise hectic day. It provides a pause to consciously reflect on how you are feeling at that moment and to reset that if necessary.
Ask yourself, if this is what your life looked like in five years, ten years time, would you be happy? Often we tolerate a lifestyle because we tell ourselves it is short term, but the reality is somewhat different.
Perhaps, what Downey and Dr Dweck are suggesting is that the competitive edge has been there all along, we just haven’t been looking for it.
