What if you did this one thing?

Often when we think of changing something significant, we think in terms of big bold goals (remember that saying – big, hairy, audacious goal?).. However from a sustainability perspective – it’s more likely that the little things will be the things that get you there. And you’re more likely to stick to them too. So, my question today – is what if you did this one thing?

What one thing I hear you ask?

It doesn’t matter really. What matters is that you look at whatever aspect of your life you want to change/improve/whatever, that you think of the one thing – however little, that will start to make a difference?

If you want to do your leadership differently, and you really don’t know where to start, perhaps ask your team. What is one thing thing they would like you to do? Or not do? One of my coaching clients asked that I send out a quick survey asking all her key stakeholders (up, down and to the side of her) these three questions:

What should she keep doing/stop doing/do more of?

Some other examples

If you want to do fitness differently, what is the one thing that you could do now? Maybe it’s getting off the bus a stop earlier and walking. Perhaps it’s walking the stairs rather than catching the lift.

Make it so that you can say: “I’m the person who walks up the stairs rather than catches the lift.”

Build it into your persona – and own it ..  We know this from science and the way that the brain thinks; when we see ourselves as the sort of person who does whatever we are trying to change, it is more likely to stick.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Find your one thing.
  • Think about what you need to make it a success. If you’re trying to reduce your plastics intake, do you need to put a keep cup in your bag now?
  • How can you keep yourself accountable? When I decided I was going to post a blog every day, I put it up on Facebook. I am also tracking it via an app.
  • What can you say to yourself about the sort of person you are?
  • Make it simple, make it easy to do. And just do it- that one thing.
